Transforming Our Idea of Emotional Pain -with Dr. Roger McFillin

conversations along the way
6

Dr. Roger McFillin, host of the Radically Genuine podcast, is passionate about his mission to “educate the public on what are normal developmental processes, and what it means to be human” and “to communicate messages that actually work and help people.”

This conversation may challenge your understanding of what we refer to in our conversation as “the medical model.” I encourage you to listen with an open mind and heart so you can tap into your own inner wisdom and seek the support you need to chart a course forward for your family.

I know that many (most?) SMP listeners have what we like to joke is the equivalent of a “phD in gender ideology” because of the amount of research we’ve done into this topic (including the work of Abigail Shrier and Lisa Littman) and how it affects our children and our families. The “brand new” and “difficult” information that I often refer to throughout this conversation with Dr. McFillin is in reference to his statements about the experimental nature of applying the medical model to psychiatric care, and the lack of evidence to support diagnosing and medicating difficult human experiences.

Though different than what I had planned, this is an important conversation. For more information on this topic, please check out the Radically Genuine podcast. There you will also find engaging and inspiring conversations on resilience, Stoicism, the human experience, parenting, adolescence, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and more.

Watch for the Q&A segment with Dr. McFillin to come out in the next day or two where he answers more specific questions, submitted by members of the SMP learning community, about how to support the health of your family and trans-identified children. If you’d like to access this Q&A but are not yet a paid subscriber, you can upgrade here:

At this point, I have embraced this destabilizing, sometimes excruciating, sometimes wondrous experience of having a trans-IDed child as “curriculum of the soul.” Because I can’t help but imagine how different the world might be if we could all take the hardest thing in our lives and view it as this, as curriculum of the soul. Practitioners of Stoicism might say, "the obstacle is the way." These are my conversations and reflections--along the way.
