Closing a Chapter -with Meredith

conversations with stoic mamas along the way

This conversation is part of a special series in which I talk with other moms determined to find healthy ways of navigating gender ideology in their homes. Moms whose stories and strategies may inspire you.

I loved Meredith’s quiet wisdom. She let me know that she didn’t plan to listen to this episode; that lending her voice to the parent choir was how she planned to end this chapter and she’s now looking to the future. Throughout our conversation, she describes so many lessons she learned along the way of what it means to be human, how important it was to honor her own reality, that difficult things like this make us all stronger, that we are each in process and there’s wisdom in approaches different from our own, the importance of forgiveness, and that grief will change us into more open and compassionate versions of ourselves. I’m grateful for this lovely conversation and am excited for Meredith’s transformation and the adventures that lay ahead of her!

At this point, I have embraced this destabilizing, sometimes excruciating, sometimes wondrous experience of having a trans-IDed child as “curriculum of the soul.” Because I can’t help but imagine how different the world might be if we could all take the hardest thing in our lives and view it as this, as curriculum of the soul. Practitioners of Stoicism might say, "the obstacle is the way." These are my conversations and reflections--along the way.
