Ana Luisa—who gave permission to use her real name and leave in any details she shares—applied to be a guest on the podcast because, in her words, ‘Perhaps having a "foreigner" perspective…can be enriching.’ I certainly found this to be true and appreciated Ana Luisa’s unique descriptions of the precarious challenges of accompanying a child who is coming of age in today’s world—a world going through its own painful evolution. How so many of us are trying to navigate without a map, burdened with backpacks of labels, and how sometimes we have to give up our visions of “a life full of mangoes” and move toward the scary unknown to continue to walk alongside our children.
She brings up the framework of Non-Violent Communication (NVC), a communication process developed by clinical psychologist, Marshall Rosenberg in the last century. NVC is a needs-based communication tool that aims to increase empathy and understanding in conversation.
