Carrying the courage of my convictions -with Kim

conversations with stoic mamas along the way

This is Episode Ten of conversations with stoic mamas along the way, part of a series of conversations with moms who’ve consciously chosen to shift the way they’re relating to this circumstance; using the context of parenting a trans-identified child to build capacity and get bigger than the problem. This episode is sponsored by Dream School. Brought to you by the creators of This Jungian Life, Dream School is a year-long dream interpretation course designed to teach you how to “decode the language of metaphor and symbol, and harness the power of your unconscious wisdom.” Stoicmom subscribers can get 15% off tuition with the coupon code: STOICMOM15 Go to https://thisjungianlife.com/join-dream-school/ to learn more and enroll.

It’s always a delight to get to have a different sort of conversation with one of my clients! Kim and I dive right into the many different ways we as moms have to let go, and the extra level of difficulty this demands if our kids required extra from us as they were growing up. Kim aptly describes this as “fierce individuation”. She shares how this circumstance demanded that she figure out where she stands, what she believes, and why; and she explains the importance of completing the tasks if we’re to navigate the current climate with authenticity. We also get into the challenges of allowing our kids to break out of the rigid pathway to “success” that has been prescribed, including the very real difficulties this can present when interacting with our peers.

Kim’s description of shifting her approach to tasks she does for others and arriving at the conclusion, “the reward is in the doing” aligns well with my views on non-attachment—so it beautifully dovetails with what we’re exploring this month in the community. At this point, I have embraced this destabilizing, sometimes excruciating, sometimes wondrous experience of having a trans-IDed child as “curriculum of the soul.” Because I can’t help but imagine how different the world might be if we could all take the hardest thing in our lives and view it as this, as curriculum of the soul. Practitioners of Stoicism might say, "the obstacle is the way." These are my conversations and reflections--along the way.
