Thank you for this. Lots of food for thought. One framework for the kind/ nurturing alpha that occurred to me during the podcast : I imagine going to the best physician ever - one who is generous/ kind/ wise. This physician puts my needs first and welcomes me into the room every time with warmth. He or she ‘has got me” in that my care is the primary focus and I am going to follow the prescribed advice because I trust. This kind of alpha is a not authoritarian/ bossy/ spirit-squashing.
Yes! Healthy, mature alphas inspire trust and loyalty rather than using leverage or fear. I do think it is exceedingly difficult to parent in this way when we have so few models. The way you describe this "best physician ever" fits I think. Yet I still find myself resisting this described scenario for the reasons I stated in the discussion plus someone could have the best intentions and still give poor advice--or someone could really understand human behavior and use this generous/kind/wise persona to take advantage of others. Yikes! I'm sounding pretty cynical, huh? I do think it's important to consider all the cultural factors that disrupt or mess with our instincts and work to develop a strong relationship with our intuition.
I loved this interesting discussion. I really appreciated SM's skeptical reaction to some of the alpha rolls, like "possess" and "give order". I can simultaneously bristle at and appreciate the necessity of these rolls. I think it's SO important that the person assuming the alpha roll actually LOVE the seeking person. Love can be the check on power. I’m as strong believer of checks and balances.
