Often when we’re deep in emotional discomfort, it becomes so intolerable that we seek out the support of trained professionals to help us make meaningful change so we can finally feel better! It can be difficult to know which type of professional will be best suited for the task. And if you’re a non-affirming parent of a trans-identified young person, it can be almost impossible to find 1 on 1 support with someone who understands what you’re experiencing.
You probably know by now, if you’ve hung out here at The SMP for long, that I’m a life coach. After having recovered from the destabilization of having a daughter with ROGD, I now work specifically with the parents of trans-identified young people. The primary focus of my practice is to help you have a different experience than that of most non-affirming parents. Generally, when we’re talking about specific goals, I support those who’ve been destabilized by this experience to get back on solid ground and to focus on what you can control: using an incredibly difficult circumstance to inspire personal growth and inner peace.
As my coaching practice reached its 1 on 1 potential, I recognized what limited capacity a single person has to offer this intimate support. I knew it was time to create a way to offer more to parents who have found their way here to The StoicMom Project, parents who are ready for something different. They’ve discovered that endless researching and being steeped in the headlines around gender ideology and this medical scandal is taking a severe toll on their health and quality of life. The SMP seeks to provide some solace and sense of recovery from the initial dark days of discovering one’s child has been converted, with potentially dangerous consequences, to this new belief system.
I knew articles and podcast interviews weren’t enough. I knew I wanted to have a relationship beyond interacting in the comments sections with other parents who were committed to growing through this. I could tell that others had figured out what I had; that there is comfort and freedom in letting go of “desistance/detransition” as the only goal and that we can’t attach the quality of our life to someone else’s outcomes–even our own children. I recognized it was time for a new sort of community for parents who’ve been in this awhile and have figured out it’s time to start living again. I was inspired to launch a new tier of commitment and create this community. You can learn more about the community and what it will look like to be a Founding Member here in Part One.
But beyond this growth-oriented community, there’s another important reason to consider becoming a Founding Member. When you join, you’re automatically added to my coaching waitlist. Participating in this community is now the first step toward a coaching relationship with me. By becoming a FM, you’ll have opportunities to engage with me live in a group coaching setting, you’ll be invited to immerse yourself in helpful concepts along the way–those principles I collected through being a teacher and life coach–that I found so supportive to my own healing journey, and you’ll get a sense of what it might be like to work with me more intimately toward your specific goals. There’s also a very real chance you’ll be in a virtual community with some of my current coaching clients.
Then a day will come when I’ll reach out and invite you to a complimentary discovery session with me. There’s no pressure to even accept this invitation, but if you do, we’ll have a conversation to explore whether 1 on 1 coaching might be a good fit for you (though I have nearly 100% say “yes!” after this conversation so feel free to decline if you’d rather not be tempted.) Regardless of what you decide, you’re welcome to keep enjoying the FM benefits of the online community and live zoom classes and conversations. (I know many who will be attracted to this community already feel confident you’re on the right track and aren’t interested in coaching services. You are here to connect with other parents who are ready to move beyond the anger and fear that consumes us in the early stages. I am so glad you feel called to this healing community!)
I’m going to be totally honest here and say that I’m pretty dang excited to create a community that is filled with parents eager to learn what they can do to make life with a trans-identified child more tolerable, maybe even better than before. A growth-oriented learning community where members support each other to recover (or create) a stable foundation, a way of being that is less impacted by the choices of another–even your own child. To get to work 1 on 1 with parents who’ve spent time learning about things like the self-coaching model and needs-based communication (via the helpful concepts along the way series) will make the work we do together just that much more productive, likely reducing the time you feel you need to spend in a coaching relationship–especially knowing you still have the community to support you. By becoming a Founding Member, you’re demonstrating a commitment to your own growth that would make any coach eager to invite you into their practice!
